Common Back Pain Treatment Methods

If your back pain does not require medical attention, especially if you have only over exerted your muscles, you can perform a few actions at home to relieve your pain. The most common back pain treatments include pain medications, bed rest, cold or hot pads and massage.

Pain relievers can help reduce the pain, if you have only pulled the muscles in your back. Common ‘over the counter’ medications include ibuprofen, aspirin, or medications with acetaminophen included. You should avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen at the same time when treating common back pain. In addition, if you have asthma, allergies, or polyps, leave ibuprofen and aspirin alone.

Cold packs work well, yet if you have conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or related symptoms you should avoid using cold packs. Cold packs can reduce back pain. Leave the cold pack on for at least twenty minutes.

Later you can apply hot packs to the area. Avoid placing hot packs over areas where scar tissue is present. Also, if you have poor circulation, avoid placing hot packs in those areas. Leave hot packs on your back for the recommended time of at least twenty minutes also. Some experts believe that heating pads are unsafe, so they suggest you not use these. You can purchase hydrocollators and place it on the area or take a hot, steamy bath or shower. Hydrocollators can be found in your pharmacy, or places where medical equipment is sold.

If your muscles are tight, you may benefit from some massage therapy. If you have someone that is willing to give you a massage, ask them if they would mind massaging the area gently. Otherwise, there may be affordable massage therapists in your area to provide the treatment. If you experience increasing pain with the massage, ask the person to stop. You may need medical treatment. If you have fallen and injured your back, or if you were recently in an accident, it is best to avoid massages. If this is the case you should first seek medical help.

You can also relax the back if your muscles are tense. Relaxation promotes wellness, since the muscles can rest from over-exertion.

To avoid complicating common back pains you should move around or go for a walk at least 20 minutes each day. Throughout the day we sit, lie on the back, stand and walk which applies gravity pressure to the spine. You can learn proper sitting strategies to help alleviate common back pain.

When sitting you can place a rolled up towel at your lower back on the chair. This can provide you with lumbar support. Naturally, if you have issues that would aggrevate your condition, then avoid using such support. Conditions such spondylolisthesis or spine stenosis can become irritated if you use back supports in this way.

To minimize back pain you should avoid sitting for long hours. Sitting can be one of the lower back pain causes. If you have a job that requires you to sit for long hours, make sure you walk around periodically.
